New Line Network – Background and Implementation
The aim of the new line network is to match today’s and the future’s need for public transit in the city. Uppsala is growing and more people want to stay, work and live here. More people means more journeys to work, schools and leisure activities in the same area. In order to make buses a more attractive alternative to more people it must be easier, quicker and run frequently, even in the evenings and during weekends.
Besides the line network itself, other improvements are included with the aim of affecting simplicity, travel times and reliability. An example is that more bus lines run so often that the timetable becomes redundant. In addition, itineraries are adapted to prioritize the bus service – Traffic signals are reviewed and accessibility improved.
The decision process
The work on the new line network for Uppsala city buses was started with the first proposal which was presented in a series of consultation and dialog meetings during 2015 and 2016. Approx. 2,500 people attended these and more than 2,200 opinions were submitted during the consultation period which was concluded on February 29, 2016. Based on these comments the final proposal was drawn up. The proposal was adopted by the Public Transport Board in the summer of 2016. The starting date for the new line network is August 14, 2017.
